Minecraft's Native Switch 2 Version Arrives October 27
After months of running on Switch 2 purely through backward compatibility, Minecraft is finally getting a proper native version. Mojang confirmed October 27 as the release date, along with a full breakdown of what changes once the game is built specifically for the new hardware.
Built Around Vibrant Visuals
Unlike the current situation where Switch 2 owners are just running the old Switch build, this version is designed from the ground up to take advantage of the stronger hardware. The clearest sign of that is Vibrant Visuals shipping as the default graphics mode rather than an optional setting players have to dig for. Expect moving shadows, light bouncing off water, volumetric fog, and Marketplace content that already supports Vibrant Visuals working automatically.
What the Beta Reveals So Far
A closed beta has already started rolling out to some players ahead of the October launch, and early testers have shared performance numbers. Running with Vibrant Visuals enabled limits render distance to 16 chunks and drops support for point lights and volumetric block lighting. Switching Vibrant Visuals off more than doubles the render distance to 28 chunks, a big jump from the 12-chunk ceiling on the original Switch. Mojang is targeting 60 FPS on Switch 2, and testers report the frame rate holds up better with the enhanced visuals turned off.
A Mario Pack Built for the New Engine
The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, exclusive to Nintendo platforms, is getting reworked to actually benefit from the new lighting system. Locations like Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza are being rebuilt so the Mario-themed world doesn't look out of place next to Vibrant Visuals-enabled vanilla terrain.
Moving From the Old Version
If you already bought Minecraft for the original Switch, Mojang has promised a digital upgrade path plus save data transfer, so existing worlds should carry over cleanly. What's still unclear is pricing: Mojang hasn't said whether current owners get the Switch 2 version for free or at a discount, only that specifics will be shared before the game actually launches.
