Minecraft's Fourth Dimension Revealed at September's Minecraft LIVE
September's Minecraft LIVE broadcast delivered what might be the single biggest structural announcement the game has had in years: a fourth dimension is officially in development for both Java and Bedrock Edition. The show also gave the first real look at the next game drop, alongside a mix of platform news, community milestones, and franchise updates spanning well beyond the base game.
A Fourth Dimension: The Sift
For over a decade, Minecraft's dimensional structure has stayed fixed at three: the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. That changes with the Sift, confirmed during the broadcast as the game's fourth dimension and the first new one added since the End itself launched.

What we know so far:
- The Sift is described as vibrant and alive, visually distinct from the more muted or hostile tone of the Nether and End
- Mojang showed a brief glimpse of the environment along with one native mob during the show
- It's planned to arrive in the base game (Java and Bedrock) sometime next year, with no specific date confirmed
- Players can get early hands-on access to the concept through Minecraft Dungeons II, where the Sift plays a central role in that game's story and world design
Ice Caves and a New Frozen Threat
The next game drop's first reveal centers on ice caves, joining dripstone, lush, and sulfur caves as another distinct underground biome type. The pitch is straightforward: frozen terrain, calcite blocks, and two new decorative and functional additions.
- Icicles grow naturally hanging from cave ceilings
- Ice crystals grow from the ground and emit a soft ambient light on their own
- Both are usable as building materials for icy or defensive-themed structures

The biome also introduces a new frozen zombie variant, unnamed as of the broadcast. Unlike a standard zombie, it applies a freezing effect on hit in addition to normal damage, and some variants throw ice projectiles at range. Game Director Agnes Larsson framed this drop as part of Minecraft's continued push toward adventure and tougher, more memorable threats rather than purely cosmetic content.
Community, Platforms, and Marketplace
- Minecraft Education marked its 10th anniversary
- Nintendo Switch 2 gets its native Minecraft release confirmed for October 27
- Sound effects packs are coming to the Marketplace, expanding audio customization beyond the base library
- A new global community challenge was announced: collectively place 50 million straw beds and 200 million cushions across the Overworld
Beyond the Base Game
A few franchise updates rounded out the show without taking center stage:
- Minecraft Dungeons II launches September 29, replacing the original's level-based structure with an interconnected open world, plus early access to the Sift as a playable dimension
- The Dungeons II story follows a world thrown into crisis after the first game's ending, with illagers organizing under a new "Illager High Council"
- Minecraft World, a physical theme park land built with Merlin Entertainments, opens in 2027 at Chessington World of Adventures in London, featuring a Minecraft-themed hotel and Escape the Nether, described as the first Minecraft rollercoaster
Between the new dimension and the ice caves reveal, this show leaned heavily on long-term additions rather than incremental content, setting up what's likely to be a significant stretch of updates heading into next year.
