Finding the Dried Ghast Block

Nether fossils, the large white bone structures scattered across soul sand valleys, have roughly a 33% chance of containing a dried ghast block. Check a few if the first one is empty. The block is easy to spot: grey with a sad ghast face, and it mines by hand with no tool required. Soul sand valleys are dangerous territory, bring a bow, shield, and blocks for cover since regular ghasts and skeletons are constant threats there.

Hydrating and Growing

Back in the Overworld, place the block somewhere you can flood with water and submerge it completely. It takes 20 minutes to hydrate, with four visible face changes marking its progress. Pick an open spot, since a ghastling pops out right there once it's done.

Once the ghastling appears, you can either wait 20 more minutes for it to mature naturally, or feed it 10 snowballs for instant growth. Snowballs come from breaking snow blocks or layers with a shovel, one block gives 4, so three snow blocks covers the whole process. Stock up before you start if you want to skip the second wait entirely. Ghastlings can't be harnessed or ridden, you need the full adult first.

Crafting the Harness

The harness recipe uses 3 leather across the top row, 2 glass blocks on either side of the middle row, and 1 wool in the center. The wool color just changes the harness color purely for looks, with 16 variants available. All three materials are easy to get early on, so you can have a harness ready before you even head to the Nether.

Riding

Approach the adult happy ghast while holding the harness (it'll follow you if you're holding one, or snowballs) and interact with it to equip the harness. Interact again to mount up. Up to four players can ride at once, with the first rider controlling flight and the other three riding along the sides.

What Makes Them Useful Beyond Flying

Standing on an unharnessed happy ghast turns it into a stationary platform, useful for building at height without scaffolding. You can dismount mid-air while it hovers, place blocks, and climb back on. They can also tow leashed boats and chest boats, letting you transport mobs or cargo by air, and leashed mobs won't take fall damage when the ghast lands on flat ground. Their lead range is also longer than most mobs, stretching to 16 blocks instead of 12.

Home Radius

Happy ghasts stay near where they spawned. Unharnessed, that range is 64 blocks; harnessed, it drops to 32. If yours keeps wandering off, leash it to a fence post to keep it in place.

Things to Watch Out For

Unlike regular ghasts, happy ghasts take full damage from fire and lava, so don't fly one through the Nether carelessly. Flying into water dismounts you, so be careful around lakes and waterfalls at low altitude. They're completely passive and can't defend themselves, so protect yours from hostile mobs if you leave it unattended. There's also no traditional taming bond involved, it's simply friendly to everyone since you raised it rather than tamed it.

Common Issues

Can't find a dried ghast block? Only about a third of fossils have one, so check several, or look for a larger soul sand valley. Block not hydrating? Make sure it's fully submerged, not just partially, and give it the full 20 minutes. Snowballs not working? You need exactly 10 fed to a freshly spawned ghastling, and make sure you're interacting with it rather than throwing them. Can't equip the harness? It only works on a fully grown adult, not a ghastling.
