Description

Left For Dead moves the Left 4 Dead formula into a survival world. Ammo runs out, and something is usually waiting in the next doorway.

The infected population climbs with every day that passes and peaks around day eleven. Whatever you plan to build or scavenge is best handled early.

Forty Ways to Die

The horde arrives in layers. Common infected make up most of it: some barely moving, some breaking into a run the second they notice you.

The specials are the actual problem. A Hunter leaps in and holds you down until somebody shoots it off. A Smoker reels you in by the tongue from a window you never checked. A Boomer coats you in bile that every zombie within earshot responds to. A Witch stays harmless only while nobody disturbs her.

Behind them come bosses, the Tank loudest among them, plus animals that caught it too. A cow is no longer just a cow.

Walls Buy Time, Not Safety

Barricades slow the horde rather than stopping it, and the material decides how long you get. Iron and stone are worth hiding behind, wood gives you a moment to think, dirt and glass are barely worth placing. A Tank ignores all of that.

Staying quiet usually works better. The infected only chase what they have seen or heard, so gunfire and sprinting announce you while crouching does not. A thrown noisemaker drags the crowd off toward empty ground.

Nobody Goes Down Alone

Dropping to zero puts you on the floor instead of back at your spawn point. Your gun still works down there, but the clock is running until a teammate crouches over you.

The second time, the color drains out of the screen and your heartbeat takes over the audio. A third trip to the floor ends the run unless a medkit turns up.

The guns are worth the install on their own: twenty of them, from sidearms up to a minigun, each with its own reload, kick and spread.

The Director Decides

The campaign drops into any world and hands pacing to an AI director. It picks when to throw a horde at you, when to send something worse, and when to leave you alone for a while. The run ends on a hospital roof while you hold out for rescue.

Outside the campaign, Survival is about how long you last and Scavenge turns it competitive. Versus puts players inside the specials, so for once they get to do the hunting.
